May: Billy Joel was Wrong: Only the Good (Don’t) Die Young Or Love makes the world go round
Everyone has joyful memories from childhood. Though she only ever made reservations for dinner, my grandmother loved making afghans and holiday tree ornaments. Some grandmothers make cookies, and other treats.
As a youth I wondered why it brought her so much joy to spend all that time on a thing only to give it away. As a clinician, I often wonder why we don’t perform acts of service more often. I always feel my best when I perform an act of random kindness. Parents often teach their children about this phenomenon. There is an entire organization devoted to sharing tips and hints: www.randomactsofkindness.org
What if you are working two jobs and your act of kindness is keeping the lights on, the rent paid, and food on the table? What if you don’t have kids? What if you feel really, really bad and you just don’t have the time?
Make time
WebMd.com describes the science of good deeds as altruism, noting acts of kindness improve physical health, and even life expectancy. But, what if you have no time? You go to the store. Pay some money toward the people behind you. Hold a door for someone (but don’t be sexist about it- everyone enjoys courtesy).
Say hello to someone who looks sad (at work/school, home, the community). Shovel your neighbor’s snow. Do volunteer work (www.volunteer.org). Don’t have time to galavant all over performing acts of service? Donate as little as 30 minutes being a crisis counselor online--and, no. You do not need any qualifications.
